Big Catch: Karmazin's Sirius Snags Fishing Tourney Show
-
3-23-2006
New York - Ah, fishin'. Images roll lazily by: Tom Sawyer; Norman Rockwell tableaux of granddads and their kin; sun-dappled waters; Howard Stern.
That's right. The blue-talk maestro is being joined by a market-proven source of ichthyological sporting content.
FLW Outdoors, a major promoter of fishing tournaments, said Thursday it reeled in Sirius Satellite Radio for a multiyear pact.
Led by Chief Executive Mel Karmazin, Sirius will become the official orbital radio provider of FLW content.
Reportedly, Sirius will sponsor all 12 of the FLW Outdoors circuits, comprising more than more than 240 tournaments. These include the Wal-Mart branded FLW Bass Series and Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Series.
Think fishing shows are just for bumpkins, city boy? That's what they used to say about NASCAR. We're not claiming that sittin' on the dock of the bay poses a threat to the Stygian roar of Brian France's stock-car racing, but FLW Outdoors Chairman Irwin L. Jacobs told Sport Fishing that, "The tournament-fishing landscape has changed dramatically since we introduced the Wal-Mart FLW Tour in 1996 and made $100,000, $200,000 and even $500,000 paydays standard at the top ranks in bass fishing."
Jacobs added, tantalizingly, "In fact, next year we are prepared to pay the Forrest Wood Cup champion $1 million."
Sirius is based in New York City; but with a savvy captain at the helm, it is nonetheless aware of the non-urban customer contingent--including those on the waterways. Thus, Sirius said the sponsorship will allow it to penetrate the market base of boaters who stay in touch via the ear in the sky.
And speaking of savvy: Karmazin's pact also means that Sirius will be featured on the FLW Outdoors TV program, which has appeared on News Corp.'s Fox Sports Net cable channel since last year.
That's a lot of bait.
